Mammoth Mountain Ski Back Trail Grand Opening

The pedestrian bridge connecting the Village Ski Back Trail to the Village at Mammoth was officially opened yesterday, February 11, 2011,  with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

The bridge is approximately 90ft. across and spans Forest Trail on the North side of The Village at Mammoth.

Rusty Gregory, Chief Executive Officer/Chairman of Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, commented “the completion of this bridge represents a big stop toward the ‘feet first’ vision of a more pedestrian community set forth in our General Plan. Its completion after 20 years of discussion is a great testament to persistence and a collaborative planning effort with the community adn Town planning staff and the Architectural Design Panel that lead to the final design produced by architect Bruce Woodward which is the bridge you see today.”

If you’re not familiar with the Ski Back Trail or pedestrian bridge to The Village at Mammoth it essentially offers a convenient way to get back to The Village from Mammoth Mountain Ski Area.

It was first opened in December 2009 and since then additional grading work was completed plus retaining walls were added to create a more consistent slope to the trail.

The ski back trail was originally proposed in the 1980s, the design began in 1994 and has been updated multiple times since then to meet the changing needs of the Town of Mammoth Lakes, U.S. Forest Service and Mammoth Mountain Ski Area.

To use the Ski Back Trail, access it near the bottom of Roller Coaster Express and the top of Chair 7. Using the natural topography of the landscape, the trail runs approximately 7,800 linear feet with an average width of 22 feet.
